Hackberry Bowl

I started a new bowl using Hackberry.  I secured this piece of wood through ebay, but really do not know anything about this type of wood.  Does anyone else know anything about it?  It is a light colored wood with some interesting dark markings in it and is turning very well. It has a great looking grain with spalting.  The bowl measures about 9 inches wide and 4 inches deep.

I will post the finish bowl on the sales page next week.  I was almost done, but needed to be finished the bottom.  Thanks for looking and if we can assist you in any ways, please let us know.

I live here in Roanoke, Va. and have done a lot of Hackberry work. It is very pretty but one must use caution first from the thorns which are hidden by the bark. Most of the Hackberry I’ve turned has been spalted to perfection but keep a spray bottle of water close because it has a tendency to get dry if you are turning at a high rpm. It is very easy and soft to work with. If you must leave project before finishing, make sure that it is well covered to retain moisture. I find that Mylands High Speed Finish wax goes with this type of wood very well.

Thank for the comment. I have another piece to turn this weekend. I find that it is a easy wood to turn and the grain comes out very easing to the eye. Keep checking back, as I am adding pieces each week and started pottery and will be adding pieces from other turners and artist from the SC, GA, & NC area.
